After driving his 4Runner with the TDI motor for a while, the car enthusiast came back to report that he experienced very few issues with the car. He was happy with the gas mileage, which was 31 MPG during the summer months. The power, he said, was “much better than a 22RE or a 3.0 even.” It produced about 200 lb-ft of torque. I have almost decided that i should buy a 2004-2005 VW Passat TDI. I live in N. California and i drive close to 2k miles every month. My current car, (2003 Nissan Maxima) is great but i want something that gives me better than 20-22MPG average. I looked at some lightly used (low miles) 2004+ VW TDI Conversions. 1.9 or 2.0? id try your best to go for a 1.9tdi. I have a mk5 sdi. o7 plate. i love my car. handles well, looks great. build quality is second to none, but i constantly find myself wishing i could overtake and accelerate more confidently. drove a 1.9 and although it wasnt fast, it wasnt slow, which the sdi just is. I have the 1.6 tdi. I like it. I find it gets to speed quite quickly in 3rd and 4th. The 2.0 fr owners though seem to be getting better mpg than me though. It's quite hard to get a high mpg in the 1.6 because it has to work harder to get to speed and has one less gear. But the new ecomotive has 6 gears and a nice body kit.

1.9 TDI lasts long thanks to some very resilient quality on Volkswagen’s part and even longer if the engine is well maintained and serviced. You could very easily make it past 200,000 miles with a 1.9 engined car. In a lot of cases, there are cars with more than 300,000 miles on the clock, but even that’s not the full potential of the 1.9 TDI.

Unfortunately, the new diesel proved to be more unreliable. So, if there is a choice between a 1.9 TDI and a 2.0 TDI car, choose the older generation of engines, even though it offers slightly worse performance, and certainly better choose the 130hp 1.9 TDI version than the 150hp 2.5 TDI (creates big costs).
